Victoria Bridge, Townsville

Victoria Bridge, Townsville is a swing bridge over the Ross Creek in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

A central pivoting, swing bridge was constructed by G.H. Royce & Co. in 1889. It is one of only two of its type constructed in Australia.

In 1924 the swing section had ceased to function but the bridge operated as a road bridge until 1975. Following the 1988 redevelopment it has been converted to pedestrian traffic with a row of modern shops built along its length.

The Bridge is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

Victoria Bridge is one of the only bridges of its kind left in the world. Take the time to read the plaques as you walk the bridge and learn about the engineering of this unique structure.

The walkways either side of the river which this bridge spans are dotted with plaques and monuments which tell the history of Townsville and its people.

Really pretty view day or night. Check out the public artwork at both ends of the bridge. Culture!
