Ta Keo

Ta Keo (ភាសាខ្មែរ. ប្រាសាទតាកែវ) is an incomplete temple in the Khleang style built as the state temple of Jayavarman V. It was dedicated in 1000 but for reasons unknown work was later abandoned, with little decoration applied. It was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

Standing east of the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom, Ta Keo is a symbolic depiction of Mount Meru, home of the Hindu gods. The temple is oriented toward the east. Enclosed by two walls, it is built in a zigurrat style. Its top level is reached by steps from the four cardinal directions. At that level, five towers are arranged with one at each of four corners and one at the center.

Ta Keo is located east of the Gate of Victory of Angkor Thom.

Highlight of the first day! Gorgeous temple. Climbing up and down doubles as an adventure in itself. Wear shoes with good traction. Ruminate at the top. Don't look all the way down when descending.

The stairs are really steep, those ancient people must have had really little feet. Be really careful climbing up, but the views are amazing.

An extensive temple with some steep stairs that lead to spectacular views. It is worth the climb to the top as long as you're sure footed. Just take it slow!

Smaller temple with not that many people around. Climb up for stellar views over the treetops.

A unfinished temple. Was deemed as bad luck because the central tower was hit by lightning during the construction. Very steep steps. Mind your step!
