Smíchov Synagogue

Smíchov Synagogue (formerly known as Smichow Synagogue) is a former Orthodox synagogue at the Andel, Prague, the Czech Republic. It was built in 1863. The synagogue combined Neo-Romanesque exterior with a Moorish-style interior.

History

Back then

In December 1897, the synagogue was attacked and nearly destroyed by an organized mob of rioters, who plundered and caused disorder in the Smíchov district. Later on, martial law was declared.

Smíchov Synagogue was reconstructed in 1930 by architect Leopold Ehrmann, who expanded the building and even gave it a "modern" appeal, therefore turning it into one of few modernized synagogues of Bohemia.

In the protectorate era, the building was used by Nazis for confiscated Jewish goods and items.

Later in 1987, the synagogue was saved from demolition and after the "Velvet Revolution", it was returned to its rightful owners, Prague's Jewish community.

Now

In 1993, the synagogue was included in the Prague' list Central register of cultural sites.

From summer 2002 to 2003, the synagogue was completely reconstructed once again. Since 2004, Smíchov Synagogue is used by the Jewish Museum in Prague as an antique shop and Jewish museum.
