Liberty Square (Budapest)

Liberty Square (magyar. 'Szabadság tér') is a public square located in the Lipótváros neighborhood of Budapest, Hungary.

The square is a mix of business and residential. The United States Embassy in Hungary and the headquarters for the Hungarian National Bank are located in the square. The Bank of Hungary building is in the historicist style of architecture. Some buildings on the square are designed in the Art Nouveau style. Two buildings were designed by Ignác Alpár. There are monuments for Ronald Reagan and Harry Hill Bandholtz. There is also a monument for Soviet occupation of Hungary. It was designed by Károly Antal.

History

A prison ("Újépület") that had previously occupied the space, was the site of the execution of Prime Minister Lajos Batthyány in 1849, following the Hungarian Revolution. The building was destroyed in 1897 and the square was built thereafter.

Delightful fountain which works with optical sensors as you approach. Also home to the only remaining Soviet army memorial in the city.

One of the most stately squares downtown, easily accessible, huge, well-kept park, popular place to hang out, playgrounds, interactive fountain, home of bank HQs and the Embassy of the United States.

"FociMozi" or FootyCinema draws thousands to Szabadsag Square. Concert atmosphere. Food/drinks stands. Documentaries/movies b/w all live matches. One of the most popular spots to catch game.

It is a sophisticated version of Erzsébet Square, sans the hipsters, the skateboarders and people begging for money, so if you prefer a classier picnic spot then this is your place.

Somehow this square is a metaphor of a rough 20 century. In the middle an obelisk remembering the Russians who liberated them from Nazis, but also Ronald Reagan who helped end the Soviet domination
