DDR Museum

The DDR Museum is an interactive museum in the centre of Berlin. The museum is located in the former governmental district of East Germany, right on the river Spree, opposite the Berlin Cathedral. The museum is the 11th most visited museum in Berlin

Its exhibition shows the daily life in East Germany (known in German as the Deutsche Demokratische Republik or DDR) in a direct "hands-on" way. For example, a covert listening device ("bug") gives visitors the sense of being "under surveillance".

The museum was opened on July 15, 2006, as a private museum. The private funding is unusual in Germany, because German museums are normally funded by the state. The museum met some opposition from state-owned museums, who felt threatened by the possibility of a museum being financially viable without receiving state subsidies.

In 2008, the DDR Museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award.

Very touristic, but you get a lot of fun. The museum is very detailed and interactive. Even if the ticket is not that cheap, to visit once is worth it.

Spent 2hours inside, no queue at 5pm. Nice retro about how ppl lived back then. But tons of ppl live in similar flats now in Ukraine. Chech a Trabant inside and take it for a virtual ride! :)

Although the museum does not contain the most exciting stuff, it succeeds in providing great knowledge regarding that time not that long ago where the city was split into two.

Great museum, despite the touristy crowd. Interactive, individual, interesting. Worth the pricey entrance. Not to be missed - the new apartment and it’s tv with original DDR programming.

Buy the ticket online and skip the queue! Try to find a time when it's not totally overcrowded, then you can enjoy the interactive parts. Otherwise it's a hassle to squeeze past everybody else...
