Champ de Mars, Paris

The Champ de Mars (Шаблон:IPA2) is a large public green-space in Paris, France, located in the 7th arrondissement, between the Eiffel Tower to the northwest and the École Militaire to the southeast. The park is named after the Campus Martius of Rome. Champ de Mars means "Field of Mars", after Mars the god of war. It was named for its original use of military drills. It was the site of Expositions Universelles in 1867, 1878 and 1889.

Champ de Mars Massacre (French Revolution)

Шаблон:Article issues Шаблон:Unreferenced During the French Revolution, the Champ de Mars was the setting of the Fête de la Fédération, on the 14 July 1790. It was also the setting of a massacre on 17 July 1791, when a crowd collected to draft a petition seeking the removal of King Louis XVI. This happened just days after the second anniversary of the storming of the Bastille. Soldiers under the martial law orders of the mayor Jean-Sylvain Baillythen opened fire. The Marquis de Lafayette was later accused by Jean-Paul Marat, a radical writer, of being involved in the fight. Lafayette was not trusted because he was an aristocrat, though he had been associated with revolutionary culture since his active involvement in the American War of Independence. However it is known that Lafayette was in charge of the National Guard that day.

A great place to explore and relax with many benches, open areas and secluded areas, perfect for a picnic or to see the Eiffel Tower, Ecole Militaire or the Wall or Peace which are at both ends.

Eiffel Tower has blinking lights every top of hour so plan on timing. For quick stop for wine/bread/cheese/etc there's Carrefour at Rue Cler. Consider staying near Ecole Militaire for less hawkers.

The Champ de Mars park holds many secluded areas for a quiet place to relax, or if you prefer sit in the large open and grass areas to enjoy the view of the Eiffel Tower, people watch and more.

Beautiful park and the Eiffel Tower. Need I say more? Is it touristy? Yes, but there's a reason everyone goes here. Wait for the tower to light up and sparkle and you won't regret it!

The Paris landmark is 324 m tall. But did you know: Gustave Eiffel originally intended it for the 1888 World Exhibition in Barcelona. Lucky you!
