Beals, county superintendent of Craw-ford county, there were eighty-five schoolhouses,including five high schools in Crawford countyin 1914, employing 113 teachers. The averagedaily attendance by pupils was 2,236. The aggre-gate amount paid in salaries to superintendents,supervisors, principals and teachers was $40,-972.20. The estimated value of school propertyin the county was $55,750, and the total amountof indebtedness, including bonds, was $19,000. Agriculture.—There were in Crawford countyin 1910 over 1,800 farms, embraced in 181,000acres. Average acres per farm, 97.5 acres. Thevalue of all farm property was $3,800,000, show-ing 70.9 per cent, increase over 1900. The aver-age value of land per acre was $11.73. The totalvalue of domestic animals was over $600,000:Number of cattle 5,700, valued at $130,000; horses 3,500, valued at $344,000; hogs 7,400,valued at $50,000; sheep 7,300, valued at $28,000.The total value of poultry was $47,000.</i> <b>Text Appearing After Image:</b> <i>Entrance to Pillard Palace, Wyandotte Cave. DAVIESS COUNTY WASHINGTON, SEAT OF JUSTICE DAVIESS COUNTY is located in the south-western part of the State, between theeast and west forks of White river, which streamwith its tributaries, Sugar, Mud, Aikman, Veal,Prairie, Smithers, Pond, Purse and other creeks,drain the county. The county lies wholly withinthe area of the coal measures and has an abun-dant supply of coal. It is bounded on the northby Greene, on the east by Martin, on the southby Dubois and Pike and on the west by Knoxand a very small portion of Sullivan counties. Itcontains about 420 square miles, which is markedby a variety of soil. The White river bottomsare rich, sandy and black loam soil, while claypredominates in the other portions. Farming isthe principal occupation of the people. Corn andwheat are the leading products, and other farmproducts are grown in abundance.
