Sacred House area of Zeus and Dione (Gaia). From c. 3,000 BC some evidence of cult of Gaia, the earth-mother, and 4th century BC construction of present cultic buildings in honour of Zeus. Gaia continued to be worshipped under the guise of Dione, the wife of Zeus - and the two deities had 2 sets of priests. From 8th century BC Zeus was held to dwell in the roots of the sacred oak tree, the rustling of leaves and cawing of birds in it gave oracles. Later the echoes and noises from the striking of a ring of sacred cauldrons on tripods were held to deliver finer details. The stone house was built 4th century BC & closed 4th cent AD.
