In the early 20th century German archaeologists transported the original Ishtar Gate from Babylon, Iraq, to a Berlin museum. In the 1980s the Saddam Hussein regime reconstructed this two-thirds size replica at the entrance to the site.
The Ishtar Gate (Assyrian: ܕܵܪܘܲܐܙܲܐ ܕܥܵܐܫܬܲܪ translit: Darwaza D'Ishtar, Arabic:بوابة عشتار) was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was constructed in about 575 BC by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city. Read further
