History
Iceland has a rich and varied history dating back to ancient times. The earliest inhabitants of Iceland were Irish hermits in the 8th century AD, followed by Norse settlers in 874. Although the medieval period saw conflicts among local chiefs, Iceland eventually formed a unified government in 930. During the early 19th century, Iceland began to cut ties with Denmark and became an independent republic. In 1944, the Republic of Iceland officially declared independence from Denmark. Today, Iceland is a thriving democracy and a member of NATO.
