Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island located in the northeastern corner of the West Indies. It is one of the oldest colonies of the United States and has a rich history, culture, and natural beauty. Puerto Rico is known for its vibrant music, stunning beaches, and friendly locals.

History

Puerto Rico was originally inhabited by the Taíno people, who are believed to have arrived on the island around 1000 A.D. The Spanish arrived in 1493 and colonized the island, ruling it for 400 years until 1898 when it was ceded to the United States after the Spanish-American War. In 1952, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated U.S. territory with its own constitution and government.

Largest Cities

The largest cities in Puerto Rico are San Juan (the capital), Bayamón, Carolina, Ponce, Caguas, Arecibo and others.

Tourist Destinations

Puerto Rico is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches and warm climate. Popular tourist destinations include El Yunque National Forest (the only tropical rainforest in the U.S.), Old San Juan (a historic district filled with colourful buildings and cobblestone streets), Isla Verde Beach (one of the most popular beaches on the island), Vieques Island (an island off the coast of Puerto Rico with stunning beaches and wildlife), and El Morro Fortress (a 16th-century Spanish fort).

Things To Do

There are plenty of things to do in Puerto Rico for tourists looking for fun activities! You can explore Old San Juan’s charming streets and visit attractions like Castillo de San Cristobal or Fortaleza San Felipe del Morro. You can also take a day trip to El Yunque National Forest or go snorkelling or scuba diving at one of Puerto Rico’s many beautiful beaches. There are also plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking in Toro Verde Nature Adventure Park or visiting one of the many waterfalls on the island.

Local Cuisine & Drinks

Puerto Rican cuisine is a mix of African, Spanish, and Taíno influences that make it unique and delicious! Popular dishes include mofongo (mashed plantains with pork cracklings), arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), alcapurrias (fried fritters stuffed with meat or seafood), pasteles en hoja (stuffed banana leaves), bacalaitos (codfish fritters) and much more! As for drinks, you must try a pitorro – a traditional rum made from sugarcane that’s flavoured with local fruits like mangoes or guavas!

Is It Expensive?

Overall, Puerto Rico is not an expensive destination for tourists – it’s actually quite affordable compared to other Caribbean islands. Food prices tend to be lower than in other Caribbean countries while accommodation can range from budget-friendly options to luxury resorts depending on your preference. Prices for attractions vary but most are reasonably priced.
