Maracaibo is the second largest city in Republic of Venezuela, located some 30 km to the north-west from Santa Rita. The capital city Caracas is in 680 km to the east. According to the latest census, the population of Maracaibo is about 2,225,100 people, making it the second largest city in Republic of Venezuela. People mostly visit Maracaibo to see its lakes and town squares.

1. Lake Maracaibo
Lake Maracaibo is a large brackish bay in Venezuela at. It is connected to the Gulf of Venezuela by Tablazo Strait (55km) at the northern end, and fed by numerous rivers, the largest being the Catatumbo. It is commonly considered a lake rather than a bay, and at 13, 210 km² it would be the largest lake in South America. The geological record shows that it has been a true lake in the past, and is one of the oldest lakes on Earth.
