Kerch (
Керч) is one of cities in
Ukraine situated some 170 km north-west of
Novorossiysk and 940 km from
Kiev, 110 km north-west of Ukraine -
Russia border. The population of Kerch is 149,000 people (as of 2010). People mostly visit it to see its mountains and castles.
Kerch is served by Kerch Intl (IATA: KHC) airport, which is 10 km away.
Places to see in it
The Mount Mithridat is located at the city center of Kerch, Ukraine and was one of the nominees for the seven wonders of Ukraine. To the top of the mountain with the height of over 90 m (91. 4 m) leads the Large Mitridates Staircase that was built in 1833-40 by the Italian architect Alexander Digbi. A well-built road goes all the way to the top.
Yeni-Kale (Turkish: Yenikale; Ukrainian: Єні-Кале; Russian: Ени-Кале; Crimean Tatar: Yeñi Qale, also spelled as Yenikale and Eni-Kale) is a fortress built by Ottoman Turks in 1699–1706 located in the North-East part of Kerch, Ukraine, then Crimean Khanate. The name Yenikale means New Fortress in Turkish (yeni - new, kale - fortress). The fortress was built under the guidance of Goloppo, who was an Italian convert to Islam. Several French engineers also took part in the construction.
