Damascus (دمشق) is the capital and the second largest city in Syria situated some 10 km south-west of Irbin, 110 km south-east of Syria - Lebanon border. According to the latest census, the population of Damascus is about 1,569,400 people. Damascus is a popular tourist destination thanks to its opera houses and museums.

Situated along Al-Buzuriyah Souq, it was built and named after As'ad Pasha al-Azm, the governor of Damascus, in 1751-52. The statue was designed by Syrian sculptor Abdallah al-Sayed. It was unveiled by the then Syrian president Hafez Assad in 1993, marking the 800th anniversary of Saladin's death.
